St Anthony of Padua by Cosimo Tura (1430 – 1495)

This early Ferraran Renaissance painting full of firm intention and drama provides petitioners to St Anthony – to whom many Catholic have recourse when they have lost something – with a side to the saint usually unexamined, namely a strength of character and a depth of contemplative mysticism that yielded the reputed miracles for which St Anthony is famed. These renowned miracles mean that at this very instant individuals the world over are seeking his intercession.

It is probably no exaggeration to say that if a study of global prayer life were undertaken it would be discovered that St Anthony is one of the most petitioned figures in any religion.
